What is Vinyl Siding?
Vinyl siding is an exterior siding type that is made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which is a form of plastic. Usually, it is used to cover the exterior of houses rather than big buildings. Vinyl siding is used for both decorative and weatherproofing reasons. It is a durable and inexpensive siding option for your house, while it has also cons coming with it such as lowering your house’s value or causing some moisture problems, keep that in mind! Another thing is that removing vinyl siding is significantly easy and because that it is manufactured chemically there are lots of options for it such as wolverine vinyl siding, liquid vinyl siding, mitten vinyl siding, and gentek vinyl siding. The list goes on and on.
Vinyl siding is quite common in cold and rainy environments such as UK, Canada, New Zealand, and Austria because it is an inexpensive siding method that provides good weatherproofing, and it simply looks good.
Installing Board and Batten Vinyl Siding
Here’s how to install your board and batten vinyl siding by yourself, step by step.
- Furring Strip Installation
Horizontal furring strips will be applied every 12 inches. If not, a nailable sheathing may be used as well.
- Base Line Establishment
A chalk line should be used to make a vertical starting base and a starting point should be leveled horizontally. Corner pots will be installed on or just below the chalk line created.
- Window, Door, and Eave J-Channeling
Around Windows, doors, and eaves should be covered with j-channels at all times, before the start of the installation of the siding. The top j-channel on the opening should be extended ¼ inches over the side and this top portion should be bent and cut over this extended side to make the water run-off that is required.
- Corners
You should start with the corners to make the application easier. The Channel of the corner will be filled with nailing a stripboard that is two inches wide to it. After cutting the locking leg off from the first panel, Snaplock Punch at 12-inch intervals will be applied.
- Nailing
Nail at the top at all times! The first nail will be positioned at the upper edge of the slot for nailing next to the top of the panel with a minimum of ¼ inches gap left to the top and the bottom of the panel. With that, the panel will hang on on its own in its right position. Therefore, the rest of the panel will be applied way more easily. After the nailing of the first nail, the remaining will be positioned in the center of the sloths for other nails and the fastened upward movement will be checked. Before starting the installation yourself, you may want to check board and batten vinyl siding pictures and contraction pictures online, so you can have a better idea of what you should be doing
